Hydraulics

Today, hydraulic systems find great application in every kind of industry from big to small. The operation of hydraulic systems has minimum mechanical linkages and functions primarily on the application of Pascal’s law on the hydraulic fluid. The unique function of hydraulic systems make hydraulic oils also different from other lubricating oil. A hydraulic fluid is not only used for its lubrication but also to transmit energy from one point to another. This makes choosing the right hydraulic oil even more vital for the system's performance.

Where are Hydraulic Fluids used

Hydraulic fluids find applications across various industries. Some examples being - Forklift Trucks, Log Splitters, Automotive Lifts, Snow Ploughs, Skid Steers, Aircraft (aviation), Air Tools, Tractors Cruise Ships, Marine Industry. The importance of hydraulic oil in hydraulic systems can be linked to the pain points of the industry which are:

  • System Cleanliness
  • Oil Leakage
  • Extreme Operating Temperatures
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Trouble Free Operation

Therefore, it is important to consider high quality synthetic hydraulic oil that performs well even in high temperatures.

Viscosity vs Temperature

Viscosity and temperature have an almost linear relationship in hydraulic fluids. The viscosity of the oil usually decreases at higher temperature. Which is why, the viscosity index of a hydraulic oil is very important. Oil of higher viscosity index is preferable to ensure performance even in extreme temperatures.

How to choose the right lubricant

The factors that determine the right hydraulic oil for your hydraulic system are largely defined by the operating conditions. Here are a few things to look out for to make the right choice.

  • Viscosity grade should match your equipment’s operating conditions to ensure performance delivery in even extreme temperatures.
  • Base stock selection is also ruled by the application. The common base stocks for hydraulic oil are petroleum-based, water-based and synthetics and the right base stock will be determined based on the kind of environment the equipment operates in.
  • Additives improve the hydraulic fluid’s protection capabilities and some of the common additives include rust and oxidation inhibitors (R&O), anti-corrosion agents, demulsifiers, anti-wear (AW) and extreme pressure (EP) agents, viscosity improvers and defoamants. The right combination of additives can enhance performance and maximise efficiency of the fluid.

Selection of the right hydraulic oil is defined by its operating conditions. It would be ideal if the temperature-viscosity complies with the ISO viscosity rating (cSt at 40ºC and 100ºC).

Mobil™ India’s hydraulic fluid are supreme performance, anti-wear hydraulic oils designed to provide long oil / filter life and optimum equipment protection to meet the stringent requirements of severe hydraulic systems using high pressure, high output pumps, as well as handle the critical demands of other hydraulic system components such as close clearance servo valves and high accuracy numerically-controlled machine tools.

Features of Mobil Hydraulic Oils

  • High Level Anti-Wear Properties and Excellent Film Strength Characteristics
  • Detergency and Keep-Clean Properties
  • Excellent Seal Compatibility
  • Performance over a wide temperature range
  • Protection against rust and corrosion

Advantages of Mobil Hydraulic Oils

  • Film strength and anti-wear properties of the hydraulic fluid helps to reduce wear, and protects systems with various metallurgy, enhancing equipment reliability and minimising maintenance. Extending maintenance intervals minimises the potential risks associated with employee-equipment interaction.
  • Reduced sludge and system deposits in hydraulic fluid helps protect critical components such as servo valves, extending component life. Extending component life helps reduce the need for disposal of waste oil and worn-out parts.
  • Excellent seal protection of hydraulic oil helps prevent seal damage, resulting in reduced leakage, better system response, and reduction of air / water / dirt contamination entering the system. This can increase equipment productivity and uptime.
  • The hydraulic fluid’s ability to perform in a wide temperature range reduces wear at cold start-up temperatures and provides effective lubrication film strength at high temperatures.
  • Prevention of rust formation and corrosion by hydraulic oil ensures longer equipment life and lower maintenance costs
