Know your Grease
The performance of a grease lubricant is dependent on its components. To select the right grease lubricant, you should be aware of what goes into its composition. Grease is made up of three components.

• Base Oil
• Thickener
• Additives

Base Oil can be either mineral or synthetic. At the extremes of temperature, synthetic-based grease performs better.

The most commonly used thickener is metallic soap. They are added to the grease lubricant to leverage their excellent load carrying capabilities.

Additives not only add their own performance-enabling properties but also improve the good and supress the bad properties of the lubricant. The commonly used additives are oxidation and rust inhibitors, extreme pressure, anti-wear, and friction-reducing agents.

Types of Grease
The most basic level of differentiating grease lubricants is by the type of thickeners. While metallic soap is popularly used as a thickener, bentonite clay, silica gel, polyurea and inorganic thickeners are also used in many grease lubricants.

• Due to its thick consistency, grease coats the equipment in such a way that it prevents leakage while also blocking foreign elements that induce corrosion
• Grease’s composition and consistency also enable ease of application and containment on the equipment
• The solid lubricants that usually settle in oil are held in suspension in grease
• Monitoring or control of the fluid level is not required in grease

How to choose the right grease?
Not all greases are created equal. Individual greases have specific formulation that maximise equipment performance under particular conditions. To select the right grease, it is essential to consider the conditions under which your equipment operates. Machine load, temperature, operating speed, all have an impact on the selection of the grease.

Selection of Grease based on application

• General Manufacturing
  The environmental conditions in this sector are marked by moderate to high temperature, moderate to high water contamination, low to high speed and moderate to high loads.
  Machine greases which have adhesive structures, which ensure long retention in equipment and reduce re-greasing intervals are ideal.
• Paper
  The environmental conditions in this sector are marked by high temperature, high water contamination, low to high speed and moderate loads.
  Machine greases that are non-staining and white in colour are suitable for paper industry’s machinery.
• Steel
  The environmental conditions in this sector are marked by high to very high temperature, high to very high water contamination, low to moderate speed and high to very high loads.
  Grease oils with high water resistance and EP properties are recommended.
• Construction/Mining
  The environmental conditions in this sector are marked by moderate temperature, high to very high water contamination, low speed and high to very high loads.
  Industrial greases which protect equipment and ensure performance under low speed and sliding conditions should be selected.
• Cement
  The environmental conditions in this sector are marked by moderate to high temperature, low water contamination, low to high speed and high to very high loads.
  Grease lubricants that deliver long-life performance and protection should be selected.
• Heavy-duty CVL
  The environmental conditions in this sector are marked by intermittent high to moderate temperature, moderate to high water contamination, low to moderate speed and high loads.
  Grease lubricants with ability to protect the equipment against wear and friction should be selected.
• Food
  The environmental conditions in this sector are marked by moderate to high temperature, moderate to high water contamination, low to moderate speed and moderate loads.
  Industrial greases with high temperature solutions are ideal.
• Wind
  The environmental conditions in this sector are marked by low to high temperature, low to moderate water contamination, low to moderate speed and high loads.
  Grease lubricants that protect the wind turbines from extreme temperature and fretting wear, rust and corrosion should be preferred.
